We all know that self-care is important. Self-care helps you manage stress, boosts your productivity, and improves your relationships (among other benefits!). Unfortunately, most of us struggle with finding the time to actually prioritise self-care in our lives.
I know all too well how difficult it is to try and make self-care a priority, especially when you’re busy. That’s why I’ve been more intentional with my approach to self-care this year. So I figured, why not share my strategies for prioritising self-care in my life with others who might find it useful?

8 ways to prioritise self-care in your life
1. Shift your mindset
The first thing you need to remember is this: self-care isn’t selfish! It’s not a bonus activity that you do when you ‘have the time’. It’s not a reward at the end of a long day, only done after you’ve ticked everything on your to-do list.
You need to remember that self-care is actually vital to your long-term wellbeing. It’s a necessary practice to ensure that you’re physically, mentally, and emotionally fulfilled. So change your perspective and start looking at self-care as something as essential as breathing and eating.
2. Practice different types of self-care
When you think about self-care, do facials and massages come to mind? While those are certainly a form of self-care, there are actually many other different categories of self-care, including mental, emotional, occupational, and even financial self-care.
Knowing the different types of self-care can be really useful when you plan out your self-care routine. It gives you a more varied and balanced approach that ensures your whole person is taken care of, inside and out.
3. Schedule it in
As I mentioned before, we’re often guilty of waiting till everything on our to-do list is complete before we practice self-care. But the key to making self-care a priority is to schedule it into your to-do list in the first place!
When you carve out the time for self-care, it’s so much easier to make sure you’re actually going to do it. Making self-care a part of your everyday tasks is also a great way to normalise self-care and make it a habit (which can only be a good thing, trust me).
4. Create a list of favourites
If you’ve ever found yourself with a few minutes of free time in your busy day for self-care, only to spend those precious minutes just searching for what to do, then do I have a life hack for you! This is something I’ve done over the last year, and has been instrumental to making self-care a priority in my life.
It’s so simply: you just need to start jotting down all your favourite self-care activities in a list! Keep adding to it every time you do something that brings you joy, and put it somewhere visible. You could even store the list on your phone if that’s convenient for you.

5. Make self-care a goal
When you create goals for yourself, it’s usually because you want to improve certain areas of your life. This can include career goals, personal growth goals, and even relationship goals. But what about making self-care a goal too?This is the first year I’ve actually committed to creating self-care goals, and it’s been a real motivating factor in my self-care practice. I’ve set a goal to do one self-care activity per day, and so far, I’ve managed to do it! The key to success with this is to be realistic - I know I can commit to just a few minutes of self-care on weekdays, so I plan that accordingly. Longer self-care activities are kept for self-care Saturdays or self-care Sundays.
6. Practice affirmations
Affirmations are, in essence, words that inspire and motivate you to approach life with a positive mindset. Here are a few examples of positive affirmations:
- I am beautiful, inside and out
- My body is strong and capable
- I am filled with wisdom
- I am worthy of respect and love
- My heart is resilient
When you practice affirmations, it’s a strong reminder of your value in this world. A reminder that you too are worthy of all the love and care you put out into the world. This small practice can make a huge impact on your self-worth!This, in turn, creates the mental belief that you deserve self-care, making it much easier to prioritise self-care in your life.
7. Practice habit stacking
Habit stacking is a nifty technique of creating new habits by anchoring them to existing habits and routines. For example, every morning, I make sure to fill in a page of my journal when I have my coffee. Having coffee is an existing (and extremely important) part of my morning routine, so attaching my journaling practice to this habit made sure that I would commit to it each day. I’ve used the habit stacking technique to successfully incorporate plenty of new healthy habits in my day, so give it a try!
8. Have your supplies ready
One of the best ways to prioritise self-care in your life is to be prepared for it! I always have my favourite products nearby so I can indulge in a bit of self-care whenever I want.
